Audited Supplier Piperine is a broad-spectrum anticonvulsant with the chemical formula C17H19NO3. Colorless monoclinic prismatic crystals, odorless, with a burning sensation after tasting. It is neutral to litmus reagents. "It is readily soluble in chloroform, ethanol, diethyl ether, soluble in benzene and acetic acid, and almost insoluble in water and petroleum ether." It can be extracted from dried near-ripe or ripe fruits of Piper nigrum L. It has a good antagonistic effect on experimental electroconvulsion in mice. It also has a different degree of antagonistic effect on convulsion and auditory seizure induced by pentylenetetrazol, tetrandrine, strychnine, and intraventricular injection of tubocurarine and glutamate. It is also effective in some forms of epilepsy. Piperine is more toxic to flies than pyrethrins.
